GUWAHATI: Almost every vegetable is sold in Guwahati in parallel prices – one being sold by the State government and the other being sold by unscrupulous vegetable vendors.

The government on Wednesday sold vegetables on vans in around 100 places in the metropolitan city at prices fixed by it. At the same time, many unscrupulous vendors were also selling vegetables throughout the day at much higher prices. While the ridge gourd (jika) was sold by the government at Rs 35 per kg, other vendors sold it at Rs 100 per kg. Likewise, tender gourd was sold by other vendors at Rs 100 per kg against Rs 30 per kg by the government, kunduli at Rs 100 per kg against Rs 32 by government, pumpkin at Rs 70 per kg against Rs 20 by government outlets, tomato at Rs 100 per kg against Rs 50 per kg by government, chilli at Rs 200 per kg against Rs 60 per kg by government, etc. The prices of almost all vegetables were charged three-fold or more by vendors against the rates at which government outlets sold them. Since the lines before government mobile vans were too long, a section of people couldn't wait for their turns to buy vegetables, and they opted to buy from private vendors at exorbitant prices.
