GUWAHATI: After a slew of online theft cases in the city, another ATM was discovered rigged by hackers on Monday. This time, it is the Union Bank ATM again in Hatigaon area, where a high-tech device used by ATM hackers was detected. The device – comprising a spy camera, a memory card and a small data device – can record ATM details of bank customers. The small device called as Automated Teller Machine hacker was kept fitted at the passage of the ATM through which cards are swiped. The micro-camera and card reader was discovered by an alert citizen, who immediately notified the police authorities. Several bank customers have lost huge sums of money as a probable hacker team skillfully managed to steal from several people, their money in both Automated Teller Machine and Paytm accounts. This wealth has been directed to Gurgaon and Mumbai, from where they were emptied. According to the police, a total of 16 lakh has been stolen till date since August 19 by the hackers and the recent discovery of another rigged ATM is a forewarning of more theft cases in the future.
