GUWAHATI: Senior Congress leader and former MP Dwijen Sarma said that the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) strongly condemned those expressing support for the Taliban in Afghanistan and urged the government to punish them with a tough hand.
In a press statement, the senior Congress leader also criticized the working of the Himanta Biswa Sarma government. He said, "We have noticed that the State BJP government is tom-toming its so-called achievements during the first 100 days, organizing a festival by spending public money. In reality, people have not witnessed any such progress. Instead, it has only established new records in failure on all fronts."
He said, "Our neighbouring States are pushing us on all sides. Our land is being illegally occupied. The border problem has assumed gigantic proportions in the last 100 days. In the first 100 days of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government, the fundamental rights of the people enshrined in the Constitution have been denied and some negative steps taken by it have stalled development in the economic and social fronts in the State. This is posing a threat to the basic structure of the Constitution. Communal thoughts and speeches have polluted the social atmosphere in the State."
He also remarked that the people of the State had hoped that after becoming a Central Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal would bring special gifts for the people, especially for Majuli residents. "Contrary to the expectations, Sonowal participated in the Ashirbad Yatra ignoring all COVID protocols and has been speaking ill of the Congress party. The people's suffering from rapid price rise is only expected to worsen with the proposed 50 per cent increase in bus fares. This will further result in a hike in price of necessities," he said.
