GUWAHATI: The Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) bagged the Platinum Award for the project 'Implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Based Meter Reading Solution' at the Indian Smart Utility Week 2021 organized by Indian Smart Grid Forum on March 5 (Friday) in New Delhi.

The award was bagged under the 'Adoption of Emerging Technology by a Utility' category and was received by APDCL Managing Director Rakesh Agarwala on behalf of the organization.

Post receiving the award, Agarwala said, "Accurate meter reading of rural consumers has always been a challenge for the APDCL. Thus, the APDCL is following an AI (Artificial Intelligence)-based meter reading solution. The APDCL meter readers are using AI-based e-Suvidha App to capture consumers' meter readings without any human intervention. This results in correct meter reading collection and proper billing leading to increase in billing efficiency as well as decrease in losses of APDCL."

Agarwala added that the solution has been operational across the APDCL since January 1, 2021.

"It is expected that implementation of the AI-based meter-reading solution will bring a financial turnaround for the APDCL," Agarwala added.
