GUWAHATI: Gulzar Hussain, lat mandal of Thelamara Revenue Circle in Sonitpur district, who was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe on Monday night, had demanded Rs 8 lakh to remove the complainant's name from a list of land brokers.

A team of the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, based on a complaint against Hussain, laid a trap on Monday night in Guwahati. Hussain was caught red-handed by the team while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the complainant. He had allegedly threatened and harassed the complainant by falsely informing him that his name had been included in the list of middlemen involved in land dealings. Hussain claimed to have prepared the list of such dalals for taking action against them. He demanded Rs 8 lakh from the complainant as a bribe for removing his name from the list of dalals, thus sparing him from ensuing legal action against him.

Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, recovered the bribe money from the possession of Gulzar Hussain in front of Satsang Vihar, Bhangargarh, Guwahati in the presence of independent witnesses.

A case was registered in Anti-Corruption Bureau Police Station vide ACB PS case No. 09/2021 U/S 7(a) of PC Act against him. Hussain was produced before the court of the special judge on Tuesday. He was remanded to three days custody. An investigation is on.
