GUWAHATI: The Asom Garia Parishad has raised the demand for reconstitution of the Goria Development Council that was formed at the fag-end of the Congress government in 2016 with 22 members, but left it without appointing the Chairman and the Vice Chairman.

Addressing the media here on Monday, Parishad president Rahamsha Ali said, "Even as the then Congress government formed this development before the Assembly election, the Council remained inactive as the posts of Chairman and the Vice Chairman were not filled up. By forming the incomplete development, the then Congress government wanted to use us as their vote bank.

"Thirty-three other development councils of various communities were also formed by the Congress. However, after coming to power in 2016 this government refused to recognize them. That led a few of the development councils to move the court making Dispur to restore them.

"Since ours is an incomplete development council, we, nine members of the council, resigned today so as to pave the way for the government to form a complete development council within a month."
