Asomiya Yuva Mancha (AYM) Alleges Scam In PMJJBY

GUWAHATI: The Asomiya Yuva Mancha (AYM) has alleged a scam involving hundreds of crores of rupees in the Prime Minister Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) in Assam. The modus operandi of the scam is availing PMJJBY benefits by showing people who are still alive as dead and who are dead ones as living ones.

Talking to the media at Guwahati Press Club on Sunday, AYM secretary general Jitul Deka said: “The PMJJBY is the proverbial goose that lays golden eggs for brokers.” Deka cited a number of instances in Barpeta district where benefits under the PMJJBY were fraudulently availed by showing people who are still alive as dead ones. “Brokers have been able to get death certificates of people who are still alive from government officials. Even policies under PMJJBY were opened in the name of some non-existing people and benefits availed. They’ve even opened policies under this insurance scheme against some dead people and availed the benefits showing them as dead. To get things done, they had to get post-mortem reports of already dead people. How could government officials issue such fake certificates and reports? From Barpeta, the scam has its tentacles spread across Nalbari, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Kamrup and Nagaon, including sar areas in the State. Banks’ customers’ service points (CSPs) have also helped brokers in the scam. We demand the government to conduct an inquiry into the scam.”
