Assam Book Fair: Book sales belie crowds

GUWAHATI: Today marked the sixth day of the ongoing Assam Book Fair at the Chandmari AEI playground and the rush of visitors to the fair continued unabated.

According to the organisers, books worth around Rs. 1.50 crore have been sold so far.

However, speaking to The Sentinel, a section of book publishers said, "The amount of books sold so far is disappointing when one takes into account the size of the crowds. It seems that many people come here for the festive atmosphere and the cultural events, and not buy books," one publisher added.

They felt that the sluggish sale of books was perhaps due to disinclination to read books among the young generation, coupled with financial pressure created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
