GUWAHATI: In a bid to empower the Forest Protection Force personnel, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday handed over 20 inflatable rubber boats to Kaziranga National Park authority at a function held at Bagori Range of the UESCO World Heritage Site on Wednesday.

During the Chief Minister’s review meeting on the safety of Kaziranga National Park in June, the personnel of Forest Protection Force made a request for new patrol boats to carry out surveillance on any purported attempt of poaching and encroachment and take appropriate steps for checking the menace. In view of the request, the boats have been delivered in less than 60 days.

Later, CM Sarma visited Hatimura Embankment breach point at Kaliabor and took stock of the repair and restoration work. He expressed satisfaction at the pace at which repair work at the breach point has been accomplished and said that embankment breach at Hatimura has been closed in 26 days.

The team engaged in the restoration efforts, working tirelessly to overcome the operational challenges and complexities posed by strong water current. The Assam CM further said that as it stands, all embankment breaches in Assam are closed, stated a press release.

Meanwhile, amidst the devastating flood situation that wreaked havoc in Guwahati, CM Sarma has attributed the establishment of private schools and universities by rampant earth-cutting on the hills of Meghalaya bordering the Kamrup (M) district as the reason behind the aggravation of flash floods in Guwahati.

Water was said to have accumulated on practically all of the city's outlying roadways, leaving residents trapped in their vehicles for hours amid heavy traffic.

People returning from work, schoolchildren and even ambulances were allegedly stuck until late in the evening owing to overcrowded roadways.

Overflowing sewage water entered homes in several areas of the city, causing property damage and unsanitary conditions.
