Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal Laid Foundation Stone of Science City at Sonapur

The Science City is been conceptually similar to a modern Science centre but of a much larger focus on frontier areas of Science and technology.

GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal today laid the foundation stone of the Science City in Sonapur, Guwahati with an initiative to take "Science to the Masses".

Meanwhile, the process for construction of the Science City, Guwahati has already been taken up in technical collaboration with National Council for Science Museums, Kolkata.

Further, the architectural design of the Science City has already been finalised.

Meanwhile talking to his Twitter handle, CM Sonowal wrote, "Once the Science Centre is completed, it will go a long way in inculcating scientific temper among students and the people of Assam."

According to the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council the scheme is being implemented with the financial assistance of the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India and Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of Assam since 2012-13, with funding pattern of 90:10.

The prime objective of the project is for popularisation and capacity building through state-of-art communication tools and technology with thematic galleries, a large number of interactive exhibits and scientific parks.

It is to be mentioned here that 250 Bigha of land near Najirakhat, Sonapur, Dist. Kamrup(M), was received from the DC, Kamrup (M) in the year 2014 for the Science City project.

Earlier, National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Director General A B Chowdhury said that the Science City in Guwahati will popularise science among the people of the northeast and help them understand scientific theories better.

The Science City in Guwahati which will be a gated complex will include- a Convention Centre, Space Odyssey, a Science Park and a Science Discovery complex.

National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India is the apex body, responsible for setting up and running several Science Cities, Science Centres and Science Museums in India.

It is primarily engaged in popularizing science and technology and creating scientific temper and attitude among the common public in general and young students in particular.
