GUWAHATI: Assam continues to miss the target in the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojona (PMGSY), a flagship scheme of the Central government, in for the past four years starting from 2017-18.

According to data till January 29, 2021, the target length of roads under PMGSY was 2,000 km. However, the complete length was 1618.63 km. The target was 5,000 km in 2018-19, but 4295.49 km roads were completed. The target was 5,230 km in 2019-20 but 3,646.74 km roads were completed. During the current year (2020-21) the target is 2,130 km, but as of January 29, 2021 the works of only 1136.91 km roads have been completed.

The PMGSY is a one-time special intervention of the Central government to provide rural connectivity in the form of all-weather road to eligible unconnected habitations in the core network. The scheme is funded by the Union Rural Development Ministry and is implemented by the Lok Nirman Bibhag (earlier called as Public Works Department or PWD) of the State government.

According to data, the cumulative length of road constructed in the State under the PMGSY since 2014-15 is 13893.71 km.
