Assam: Cotton College Completes 122 Years of Glorious Existence. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu Extend Greetings

GUWAHATI: Cotton College (erstwhile Cotton College) celebrating 122 years of glorious existence on Saturday. On May 27, 1901, Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the Chief Commissioner of the erstwhile British colony of Assam, officially opened the Cotton College.

39 students and five teachers, including Frederick William Sudmerson, the college's first principal, formed the foundation of the institution.

Moreover, Cotton University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Assam and Northeast.

Hem Barua, Bhupen Hazarika, Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya, Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Homen Borgohain (famous Assamese writer and journalist),Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma Akhil Gogoi, Aftab Hussain Saikia, Rita Chowdhury (famous poet and novelist), and Zerifa Wahid are just a few of the talented Assamese students who have attended this college.

Taking on twitter, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu extend greetings, Cotton University (erstwhile Cotton College) is a historic institution that has carried the light of higher education in the region and is a hub of intellect & culture.

My greetings to the Principal, all the faculty, students and alumni on the occasion of its Foundation Day.”

On the other hand, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also wrote, “Today is a special day for every Cottonian. The former Cotton College and the present University is celebrating its foundation day today. As a Cottonian, I have many memories at the moment Cotton College is a college that has been awarded the prestigious 'Sri Ramakrishna Award'

Since 1901, Cotton College has continued to lead the way in the area's higher education as well as its literary, cultural, athletic, political, and intellectual spheres.

In 2011, a government act in Assam promoted it to become Cotton College State University.

In 2017, Cotton University became the new name for it.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, also graduated from this reputed college in the area. Sarma served as the Cotton College Union Society's (CCUS) general secretary during three periods, from 1988 to 1989, 1989 to 1990, and 1991 to 1992.
