GUWAHATI: State education minister Ranoj Pegu on Thursday lauded the decision of the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) to introduce OMR sheets in the HSLC exams of 2024, saying it would help the student to get early training in the format which is used for competitive exams like that conducted by the UPSC.

The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), which conducts the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) matriculation exams, had announced on Wednesday that Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets would be used for 4 (four) subjects, each carrying 50% of the total marks in the subject, in the HSLC exams slated for 2024.

Education minister Ranoj Pegu said that SEBA being an autonomous body, it was authorized to hold the HSLC exams in the way it deems fit and that introduction of personalized OMR sheets was the right thing to do.

Pegu said that personalised OMR sheets would be used for the first time in this exam for objective type questions, a format that was used in most of the competitive exams, including that held by UPSC. Exposure to OMR would help train the student to be proficient in the format, he added.

The minister added that OMR Sheets, which would be introduced in the HSLC Examination of 2024, would carry 50% of the total marks for 4 (four) core subjects of English, General Mathematics, General Science, and Social Science.

Rest of the 50% marks would come from subjective questions, which would be written by the students in the regular answer sheets provided by SEBA, the education minister said. Ranoj Pegu also opined that as OMR sheets are read by computers, it would pave the way for a computerized revolution in the conduct of HSLC exams by SEBA.
