GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has raised the topic of granting Scheduled Tribes (ST) status to the six communities of Assam and alleged that the Central Government has deceived them by not keeping its promise. Adding that even though Rameshwar Teli, who belongs to the tea tribes community, is a Union Minister, the government has not paid heed to the demands of the six communities of Assam.

The APCC said that granting ST status to the six communities of Assam was a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s agenda in the 2014 general elections, as well as in the 2016 state elections, but no positive step have been taken yet to grant ST status to the six communities. The APCC also alleged that the BJP was playing with the emotions of the people and treating the issue as a mere tool for elections.

Even the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs had clarified that the Assam Government had not given any proposal regarding this demand in November 2022. Twelve communities were given reservation status in 2022 and the members of the six communities of the Assam had protested against their non-inclusion.
