GUWAHATI: The State government’s plan to provide free of cost sugar to tea estate labourers will be delayed now because of no response received from suppliers. The government has a plan to provide two kg sugar free of cost per tea garden family so as to rid them the habit of taking salty tea. Intake of salt with tea leads to problems for expecting mothers. Even as there is Rs 40 crore budgetary allocation ready for free sugar, the government cannot start the scheme on schedule in October as the State Food and Civil Supplies Department that floated tender for the procurement of sugar has failed to get any bid. The department has floated a fresh tender, if it gets bidder the scheme may be started from November.
