Assam Governor attends awareness programme to observe International Day against Drug Abuse

Calls for making action against drug trafficking a mass movement

GUWAHATI: “Drug and substance abuse and their illegal trafficking is a serious concern not only in India but in the countries across the globe. The drug abuse has widespread impacts on the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities,” said Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria while attending an awareness programme to observe International Day against Drug Abuse and illicit trafficking at a function held in the city on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Kataria said that drug addiction is not only a deviant behavior but a serious social problem. Due to mental stress, depression, anxiety and lack of proper guidance, some youth are getting distracted from the main stream and as result leading them to disaster. Due to ignorance, youth are getting trapped in the quagmire of drugs. This is adversely affecting their health and career. This is really a serious matter because children and youth are the future of this country, the Governor exhorted.

Kataria also said that drug addiction is such a serious problem that it has undeniably been a major obstacle in the all-round development of the society. It is a challenge which requires collective strength, determination and commitment to address effectively. He also said that social and religious organization should also work together to fight against drug abuse.

The Governor also stressed that parents and teachers play an important role in making the youth alert of the ill effects of drug abuse. There should be a strong family bonding and the parents should give time to their children and regularly talk to them, understand their strengths and weaknesses. Teachers also play a pivotal role in to sensitizing the youth on the subject of drug abuse. Governor Kataria appreciated Byatikram MASDO, a social organization and underlined that awareness among people against drug abuse can act as a deterrent to address the problem of drug abuse and its influence on the youngsters. He also called for coordinated effort to create a mass movement against drug abuse and its illicit trafficking to help the youth and the society. The Governor also appealed to the young generation to refrain themselves from using drugs and live a healthy life and contribute to the development of the nation. Director General of Police GP Singh, Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh Ruhul Amin, Director of NERIM Group Prof. Sangeeta Tripathi, cine actress Nishita Goswami along with a host of other dignitaries were present at the function, stated a press release.
