Three colleges to get more autonomy

GUWAHATI: Assam Governor and Chancellor of the State Universities advocated that three autonomous colleges should be given more autonomy so that these colleges may give degrees on their own. In this regard a meeting was convened at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday in the presence of Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, Education Advisor Professor Mihir Kanti Choudhury, Principal Secretary Education Kalyan Chakravarty, Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram, Joint Secretary of Higher Education Nivedita Laskar, Director of Higher Education Dharmakanta Mili and Principals of North Lakhimpur College, Lakhimpur, Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat and Nowgong College, Nagaon.

After detailed discussion in the meeting, it was decided that National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 will be implemented in the State and as an initial step more powers will be granted to the three autonomous colleges of Assam namely North Lakhimpur College, Lakhimpur Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat and Nowgong College, Nagaon.

The Governor asked the Education Minister and the Principal Secretary, Education to see that the secondary education in all the three autonomous colleges is transferred to some senior secondary schools to enable them to concentrate exclusively on quality degree courses. He further said that all the vacant faculty positions should be filled up at the earliest and ensures that no contractual teachers remain on the roll.

The Education Minister said that the colleges using their autonomy should concentrate on rendering quality education. They should also vie for creating good human resources by producing more entrepreneurs i.e. job givers rather than job seekers. Also, Extension Services should be promoted. He said educational institutions i.e., higher secondary schools, colleges and universities should not only focus on educating enrolled students but also on educating potential non enrolled students in their local community by promoting Extension Services.

As proposed by the Education Minister it was decided to appoint a committee to study and suggest ways and means for these autonomous colleges to start implementing NEP 2020, stated a release.
