Guwahati: Amid the outbreak of Avian Influenza in many states, the Assam Live Stock and Poultry Corporation (ALPCo) has said that 10 mobile vehicles would be patrolling round parts of Guwahati to ensure that people are getting meat and poultry products at affordable prices during the festival of Bhogali Bihu.

Poultry and meat would be supplied to the people of Guwahati by the Assam Livestock and Poultry Corporation, Chairman of the Corporation Manoj Saikia said.

The corporation has 52 shops in Guwahati which will sell meat at fixed prices. "We produce 2 trillion kg of chicken meat in Assam every month. Among which Assam itself needs 60 to70 lakh kg of meat," Saikia added.

He further stated that neighbouring states too procure poultry meat from Assam, so there is no reason to worry about chicken meat being imported to Assam.

Meat to be supplied from the Uruka Day (The night before Magh Bihu is called Uruka, the night of feasts) in 10 mobile vehicles at a fixed price of Rs.140. Mobile vehicles will be available in different parts of the city including Zoo tiniali, and Super Market, Chandmari, Lokhra, Maligaon, Maskhowa.

The Livestock Corporation has launched a campaign from Wednesday in different parts of the city to prevent unscrupulous traders from increasing the price of the meat for their own benefits. It has also discussed with the district administrations to look at this matter and urged to take strict action if anyone found raising unnecessary prices of meats during these days.

The Assam Livestock And Poultry Corporation (ALPCo) Ltd was incorporated on 06 February 1984. It is classified as a State Government company, registered at Registrar of Companies, Shillong.

It is to be noted that, the state government has already stopped the import of poultry from other states to prevent the spread of bird flu and taking advantage of this, some unscrupulous meat sellers have increased the price of meat in the entire state including Guwahati.

The Corporation is working hard to ensure that unscrupulous traders cannot hike the prices of meats during the days of Bihu.

Meanwhile, in Delhi, the Delhi Municipal Corporations prohibited the selling of chicken in their respective regions after bird flu cases confirmation earlier this week in the national capital.Hotels and restaurants were warned not to serve egg-based meals or poultry meat.
