GUWAHATI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has directed the State government to conduct an investigation and submit a report within a month regarding the death of five people during the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) protests last year. If the State government fails to submit a report, then it will have to compensate the victims' kin by providing Rs 2 to 3 lakh, said APPC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) spokesperson Prafulla Kumar Das while addressing the mediapersons.

The five persons who lost their lives in the police firing during the protests are - Sam Stafford, Dipanjal Das, Abdul Alim, Ishwar Nayak, and Dwijendra Panging.

Das underlined that, APCC president Ripun Bora had filed a case at the AHRC demanding compensation for the victims' kin and punishment for the persons responsible for the deaths.

"The hearing for Bora's case took place on January 13, January 30, February 20 and February 25. The AHRC asked the Assam government to submit a report regarding the deaths but till date the latter has not submitted the same. During the recent hearing on September 14, the AHRC gave a direction to the State government to submit a report within a month or compensate the victims' kin," Das added.
