Assam loses its tallest politician and statesman Tarun Gogoi, tributes pour in

A huge loss for Northeast India, said many ministers from the neighbouring states

Guwahati: The demise of the veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi has left the state as well as the country numb. Tributes started pouring in as soon as the news got out.

The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind condoled the death of Gogoi. The leader will be remembered for his efforts towards improving the law and order situation and fighting insurgency in the state, said the President through a tweet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is anguished by the news of Gogoi's death, called him a popular leader and veteran administrator, who had political experience in Assam as well as the Centre. He shared a photo of him with Gogoi on Twitter.

The Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal expressed his heartfelt condolences on the demise of Tarun Gogoi. CM Sonowal has earlier said that Gogoi was a father figure to him. Calling his demise as 'the end of an era in Assam's public life,' Sonowal wrote:

Senior Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi called Tarun Gogoi 'A true Congress leader.' Condoling his death on Twitter, Gandhi said that Gogoi was a great and wise teacher to him.

The official Twitter account of Assam Congress shared a photo tribute on the demise of the former CM Gogoi.

The Union Minister of Railways, Piyush Goyal also shared his condolences on Twitter. "His long service and contribution to public life were noteworthy," said Goyal in his tweet.

The various ministers from the neighbouring states have also sent in their tributes for the leader.

The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma wrote that he was pained to learn about the demise of former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi. Sangma said, "Gogoi's demise will create a huge vacuum in the political arena of the Northeast."

Zoramthanga, the CM of Mizoram condoled the death of Gogoi and called it a huge loss for the Northeast region.

Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb also took to Twitter to condole the death of Gogoi.

Kiren Rijiju, MP from Arunachal Pradesh shared photographs with the former Assam CM and said he will forever cherish the special moments with him.
