Guwahati:  On the occasion of National Street Vendors Day, the National Association for Street Vendors of India (NASVI) calls attention to the urgent need for safeguarding the livelihood rights of street vendors, emphasizing their fundamental right to life and employment.

NASVI highlights the significance of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014, enacted to ensure the protection of street vendors’ livelihoods in alignment with constitutional provisions under Section 19-1 (G) and 21.

While acknowledging the establishment of approximately 4600 Town Vending Committees (TVCs) nationwide, NASVI underscores the crucial role of municipal bodies and TVC members in understanding and fulfilling their responsibilities. The organization commends the municipal commissioner and chief executive officers for their active participation in TVC meetings.

Emphasizing adherence to the directions issued by the Standing Committee on Urban Development on March 13, 2013, NASVI appeals to Municipal Corporations and Urban Administrative Bodies to comply with Section 20 of the Street Vendors Act, 2014. This section mandates the establishment of Grievance Redressal Committees, essential for addressing the concerns and issues faced by street vendors.

NASVI asserts that street vendors are self-employed individuals, not encroachers, and it is the government’s responsibility to protect their rights. As the nation commemorates National Street Vendors Day, NASVI urges swift and comprehensive action to implement and uphold the provisions of the Street Vendors Act, 2014, thereby ensuring the dignity and livelihood of street vendors across the country.
