GUWAHATI: The cases of human trafficking in the State are on the rise. This was revealed in the NCRB (National Crime Record Bureau) data for the year 2019.

According to the data, Assam recorded 201 human trafficking cases in 2019 which is the third most in the country after Maharashtra with 282 cases and Andhra Pradesh with 245 cases. Out of the total trafficked victims, 80 were minors among which 56 were female. The number of victims above 18 years of age is 168 of which 132 were female.

Human trafficking cases are quite negligible in other States in the Northeast where Assam tops the list. While Meghalaya recorded 22 cases in 2019, Mizoram had seven cases, both Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim registered zero cases, Nagaland registered three cases, Manipur registered nine cases and Tripura registered one case.

It is to be mentioned that Assam has a human trafficking crime rate of 0.6 per one lakh population. This rate is much above the national human trafficking crime rate of 0.2 per one lakh population. A total of 2,163 human trafficking cases were registered across the country during the year.

When it comes to percentage share of State, Assam's percentage is 8.9. This is quite a high percentage when the State's population is taken into consideration. On this count Assam has ranked third. The only States having a higher percentage than Assam are – Andhra Pradesh (10.8) and Maharashtra (12.5).
