GUWAHATI: The Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union has called for strike on October 7, 2021, in support of various demands. The Union will boycott oil transportation to the entire north-eastern region on that day. Talking to The Sentinel, Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union general secretary Ramen Das said that the petroleum workers worked under contractors of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) and SPCL. They had rendered sincere service even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The oil companies invite tenders for appointment of transport dealers and distributors. The petroleum workers work under these transport dealers and distributors. The workers have long been deprived of PF and ESI benefits. They do not get bonus, gratuity and other facilities. Moreover, the tender conditions are also not fulfilled by the dealers and distributors. We had placed our demands before the management of oil companies on April 8, 2021. We had also submitted a memorandum to the Union Petroleum Minister on September 25, 2021, listing our demands and grievances. However, all our demands have fallen on deaf ears. Hence, we are left with no option but to call for strike for the fulfilment of our grievances," said Das.
