GUWAHATI: In a bid to re-galvanize the flagging fortunes of th Congress party in the State, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Bora chalked out a programme to hold a series of meetings in various districts from May 4 to May 30.

According to APCC sources, these meetings will constitute the first phase of the outreach programme.

Bora will visit the Tinsukia district on May 4 and May 5 and cover the Sadiya, Doomdooma, Digboi and Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs).

Bora will stay in Dhemaji on May 7 and May 8 and visit the Jonai and Dhemaji LACs. He will visit Lakhimpur on May 10 and May 11 and cover the Dhakuakhana, North Lakhimpur, Naoboicha and Bihpuria LACs.

Bora will visit Nagaon on May 13 and May 14 and cover the Raha and Dhing LACs. On May 16 and May 17, he will visit Dhubri and cover the Dhubri, Gauripur, Bilasipara (East) and Bilasipara (West) LACs.

The APCC president will visit Cachar from May 20 to May 22 and cover the Silchar, Sonai, Dholai, Udharbond and Lakhipur LACs. Bora will visit Sonitpur from May 25 to May 27 and cover the Tezpur, Dhekiajuli, Barchalla, Rangapara and Sootea LACs.

Bora will visit Morigaon on May 29 and May 30 and cover the Morigaon and Jagiroad LACs, the sources said.

Bora will be accompanied by various APCC working presidents, in-charge presidents, general secretaries and joint secretaries during his tour.

The sources further informed that all Congress MPs, ex-MPs, MLAs, ex-MLAs and ex-Ministers of the districts concerned have been directed to attend the meetings organized by the APCC president.

The sources said that the APCC is worried about the serial electoral reverses suffered by the party and the defections of many legislators elected on the party ticket in the 2021 Assembly elections. The latest defection to the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) of former APCC president Ripun Bora has also hurt the party.

Moreover, the Congress parted ways with ally All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on a bitter note, with Bhupen Bora going so far as ruling out any alliance with Badruddin Ajmal's party in future. Consequently, while the APCC leadership is aiming to woo back all sections of traditional Congress voters, it is targeting the minority community in particular with a view to weakening the AIUDF in the coming days.
