GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APPC) has complained to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Assam against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Phani Talukdar and demanded his disqualification for "indulging in bribery and corrupt practices" by distributing money to the voters of Bhabanipur LAC, which attracts the provisions of Section 123 (1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 as well as the Election Commission of India's Model Code of Conduct.
The APCC letter to the CEO, Assam, stated, "It has come to the notice of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee through media reports and video clippings that the BJP candidate of Bhabanipur constituency, Phani Talukdar is indulging in bribery and corrupt practices by distributing money to voters outside his residence in Bhabanipur. This brazen act by the candidate is a gross violation of the provisions of Section 123 (1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 as well as the Election Commission of India's Model Code of Conduct. The news report and video clippings have become viral in social media platforms which displays distribution of money to the voters of Bhabanipur LAC just a day before polling of the ensuing Assembly bye-elections in the state of Assam."
The APCC urged the CEO, Assam to take prompt and immediate action against Phani Talukdar by disqualifying him from contesting the ensuing bye-elections to be held on October 30, 2021.
