GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Monday flayed state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita for his ‘disparaging’ comments on the Mishing community, asking him to apologize to the community.

The remark was made by APCC vice-president Bobbeeta Sharma during a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan in the city on Monday. Sharma came down heavily on the state BJP president for his comment on the Congress campaign ‘Chang-ge Chang-ge,’ regarding which he had remarked that the ‘rootless’ Congress is climbing ‘here and there.’ She demanded that Bhabesh Kalita should clarify what he meant by the comment.

Bobbeeta Sharma went on to state that Mishing people lived in ‘Chang’ houses near rivers with raised floors to deal with the problem of floods. ‘Chang’ refers to the raised floor of the houses, which are built on stilts or poles, which is part of their tradition and culture, Sharma said.

The APCC vice-president also slammed the BJP leaders for looking down on the tribal communities and ‘running away’ from their problems. She alleged that no development work has taken place in the Mishing Autonomous Council, demanding that the BJP should provide a list of the work done under the Mishing Autonomous Council.
