GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Trinamool Congress (APTC) has opposed the decision of the High-Level Committee on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord to take 1951 as the cut-off year for defining the word ‘Assamese’ as appeared in Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Assam Pradesh Trinamool Congress general secretary Antosh Choudhury said, “We demand March 24, 1971, as the cut-off date for defining indigenous Assamese under Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. If the committee doesn’t want to make 1971 as that cut-off year, it should also not also make 1951 as the base year. In that case, let it make 1826 when the Yandavoo Treaty was signed as the base year for the identification of the Assamese.” The party has also opposed the NRC, CAA and the proposed NPR. Criticizing the decision to stop Sanskrit Tols and Madrassas in the State, Choudhury said that no medium of instruction should be stopped.
