GUWAHATI: The State's Transport Department will launch an 'Operation All Clear' from March 1 to bring to heel city buses operating in Guwahati city, the owners of which have run up huge arrears in payment of various taxes.

According the District Transport Officer (DTO), Kamrup (M), owners of more than 158 city buses owe the department over Rs 20 lakh in arrear taxes. The arrears have accrued over the last two-three years, the DTO said.

Moreover, many of the city buses plying on the city roads lack requisite documents such as fitness certificates and insurance documents. The owners have not bothered to renew mandatory documents, he said.

The DTO said that despite being warned about their lapses several times, the city bus owners have not cooperated with the DTO's office.

As such, it has been decided to carry out inspections in various routes of the city. Strict action will be taken against any city bus owner who is found to be guilty of any act of omission or commission, the DTO added.
