Assamese community celebrates Bohag Bihu in Andaman

GUWAHATI: The newly-formed Assam Association, Andaman & Nicobar Islands organized Rongali Bihu on Sunday in Port Blair, stated a press release.

Around 80 members of the Assamese community living in these islands mingled with great enthusiasm and fervour on the wonderful occasion of Rongali Bihu - the premier festival of Assam.

The day-long programme commenced with flag hoisting by chief guest Diganta Gogoi, IFS (Retd), MoEF&CC, followed by Swahid Tarpan (a tribute to the martyrs). The cultural programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. The event showcased the rich traditional Assamese culture, which helps in fostering a sense of cultural identity among the younger generation. Different traditional games like Koni Juj etc., were organized for the children. A mukoli Bihu programme was held and the crowd was soaked in the spirit of Assamese dance and music.

The women-folk were dressed in traditional attire of lively mekhela chador and their counterparts adored the gamosa - the traditional Assamese towel woven in handloom. The logo of Assam Association, Andaman & Nicobar Islands was also unveiled on the occasion.

The Bihu platter, consisting of delicious traditional food, was served on the occasion with all merriment and exuberance.
