GUWAHATI: Assam ranked second in incidence of cyber crimes in the entire country last year, but the worrisome aspect is that most of these crimes have remained unsolved.

According to National Crime Bureau (NCB) data, Assam has not only witnessed a continuous rise in cyber crimes in the last three years, but the latest figures show that the rate of cyber crimes in the State is 13.8 per cent higher than the national rate.

NCB data reveals that a total of 2,231 cyber crime cases were registered in the State in 2019, which went up to 3,530 cases in 2020. In 2021, cyber crimes in the State shot up to 4,846 cases.

The Assam Police has already set up a helpline number (1930) to deal with incidents of cyber crime. Police sources said that apart from routine complaints regarding cyber crimes at various police stations across the State, numerous complaints are also registered via the 1930 helpline number.

The sources said that cyber criminals are so technologically advanced that many perpetrators are traced to foreign countries. As a result, many cases remain unsolved, the sources said.

The sources added that in case of cyber crimes, prevention is truly better than cure and, hence, all citizens should be extremely careful and not open any new link out of curiosity or enter into online transactions with strangers.
