ATM fraudsters' gang busted; 88 stolen cards seized by Hatigaon police

The Hatigaon police on Saturday night arrested four more members of a gang of ATM fraudsters, two members of which were arrested earlier on October 9 and October 13.

GUWAHATI: The Hatigaon police on Saturday night arrested four more members of a gang of ATM fraudsters, two members of which were arrested earlier on October 9 and October 13. Those arrested last night have been identified as Barpeta-based Lutfur Rahman alias Rocky (26), Aminul Haque alias Amin (27), Sahidul Islam (30) and Hanifur Rahman (30) of Sonapur Pathar in Kamrup (M). The police recovered 88 stolen ATM cards of various banks, a Maruti Swift car, a Maruti Baleno car, a KIA Seltos car, Rs 15,000 in cash, three POS (point of sale) machines, a Wi-Fi device, six Android phones and two iPhones from their possession.

According to police sources, two incidents had occurred in an ATM at the Ghoramara area here on October 4 and October 5 last, wherein members of the gang stole the ATM cards of two elderly men on the pretext of helping them to complete their transactions. Subsequently, the gang withdrew Rs 68,000 from the bank account of one victim and Rs 1,10,000 from the bank account of the other victim. Two cases (No 461/22 and 462/22) were registered in this connection at the Hatigaon Police Station.

The sources said that on the basis of CCTV footage, the police traced a car and arrested one Babul Ahmed on October 9. Later, the police arrested one Ziarul Rahman on the basis of clues found in bank transaction details. Saturday's arrests were made on the strength of information provided during interrogation by Babul Ahmed and Ziarul Rahman.
