GUWAHATI: A meeting to chalk out a plan on prohibiting child marriage at the gaon panchayat level as well as at the grass-roots level was held on Friday under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Kamrup, Keerthi Jalli, at the Conference Hall, Integrated Deputy Commissioner Office, Amingaon.
It was attended by all the panchayat secretaries of the district and the representatives of various organizations like the child welfare committee, child line (1098), NGOs related to child protection and rehabilitation, the one-stop centre, and the district legal services authority.
Addressing the discussion, the Deputy Commissioner said that since child marriage is a social evil, it should be uprooted in the district, and the role and responsibility of the GP Secretaries designated as Child Marriage Prohibition Officer in this aspect is immense. She appealed to all those related to child protection and rehabilitation to work collectively to eliminate the menace of child marriage from the society and create a society free of child marriage. She also advocated for more awareness programmes involving village heads, anganwadi workers, students, VDP members, etc. at the village level. The Superintendent of Police, Kamrup Hitesh Ch. Ray, also outlined the role and responsibility of GP Secretaries and said that a key role has to be played by them.
Sizal Agarwal, SDPO Rangia, also pointed out the procedure of filing an FIR in this aspect and its related issues. The representatives of CWC, NGOs related to child protection and rehabilitation, One Stop Center, Child Line, DLSA, and the Education Department also spoke on the occasion, highlighting different roles and activities done by them to curb this social menace.
