GUWAHATI: The Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX)has appealed to the Assamese people living across the globe to help the xabha's initiative to digitalize and preserve valuable Assamese books.

AXX president Kuladhar Saikia made this appeal at the three-hour long webinar organized by the Assam Association of North America recently. Assamese organizations and AXX chapters across the world, including participants from Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Oman, Kuwait, India, Scotland, Britain, the Netherlands and Canada took part in the webinar.

"We will digitalize and archive valuable Assamese books. We want your support from all of you," Saikia urged participants.

Saikia, a Sahitya Akademi awardee and former Director General of Police discussed about importance of preserving rare and old Assamese literature by digitalization and developing creative ways to engage the next generation of the Assamese people.

The meeting also discussed about Unicode and Google Translation.

Saikia urged the people to submit Assamese words to Google Translate, which instantly translates words, phrases, and web pages between English and over 100 other languages. The service was currently accepting submission of Assamese words to its vast vocabulary.

"Anyone can submit Assamese words and phrases to Google Translate for free. As the words are submitted, an expert group verifies them before adding it to the online dictionary and vocabulary. Once Google has enough words and phrases, it will enlist Assamese language in its translation service as well," Saikia said.
