GUWAHATI: With a year-and-a-half left for the 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly elections, the political parties are getting ready and making plans.

In an All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) general council meeting at Monisha Bibah Bhawan, Hatigaon on Saturday, Maulana Badruddin Ajmal was re-elected as party president for the fifth consecutive term. AIUDF ex-MP Radheshyam Biswas put Ajmal’s name forward and his proposal was accepted by all the 27 organizational districts of the party.

Addressing the media after his re-election, Ajmal said that the party has started preparations for its organizational polls as per the Election Commission of India's (ECI) guidelines.

Upon being asked on Tarun Gogoi’s amiable attitude towards the Congress-AIUDF alliance, Ajmal said, “There are no qualms that Gogoi is a good man. However, he is not in any official position in the Congress now. If the Congress party wants an alliance, then they will have to forward an official letter mentioning the same and only after serious discussions we can arrive at a decision.”

When asked if he still bears malice over Gogoi feigning ignorance about Ajmal’s existence, the AIUDF president said that since it was a long time ago, he bears Gogoi no ill will. “At present, the Congress party is at an all-time low and at the base level in the whole country. They have lost every election and even lost in all four constituencies in the Assam by-polls. The AIUDF, on the other hand, contested in just one and won it,” said Ajmal.
