GUWAHATI: As the Baghjan fire incident is about to complete one month, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) slammed the government and the OIL (Oil India Limited) for not being able to douse the flames.

AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal said, "It has been one month but the fire has not yet been doused. The government should take measures so that such incident never occurs in any oilfield of the country."

Ajmal said that the present situation in Baghjan is not only fire but also the unimaginable problems of the locals, which is a major issue. "Their problems have not yet been resolved. The affected families were brought to relief camps but either the government or the OIL has not taken any initiative to address their problems. After the public protests, the OIL authorities, Central and State governments' representatives, the Chief Minister, and the Union Petroleum Minister visited the Baghjan area and gave various commitments. But still none of those promises have been fulfilled," the leader added. He asserted that the people of the relief camps are worried that when will they be able to return to their homes. "The people have incurred huge losses during the fire. Their fields were destroyed and now there is less possibility for further cultivation in those lands," he underlined.

Further, he stressed that the government should publish a report about the total loss of the Baghjan tragedy and a scheme should be introduced for the development of the area.
