GUWAHATI: The Assam Nagarik Samaj has raised the demand for a judicial inquiry into the Baghjan oil well blowout that has already claimed two lives.
Addressing the media on behalf of the Assam Nagarik Samaj at Guwahati Press Club on Thursday, Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan said, "Oil India Limited (OIL) has been extracting crude oil without following any rules and regulations. Such a tragic incident occurred only because of negligence on the part of OIL.
"Equally responsible for the tragic incident are the Pollution Control Board and the State Forest department. OIL, the State and the Central governments and John Energy should pay compensation to the affected people. There should be a judicial inquiry into the incident, besides immediate relief to the affected people by the State government and OIL authorities. OIL authorities need to keep this in mind that no such incident is allowed to recur in future."
