GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court Bar Association opposed the decision to shift the Gauhati High Court and other courts from their present location to a proposed location at Rongmahal, in North Guwahati.

In a press meet on Monday, President of the Association Mrinal Kumar Choudhury said, “We have been protesting against this decision since June, and the bar association has expressed anguish over it. The association expressed its resentment over the unilateral follow-up measures taken by the state government after its decision on May 23 by subsequently constituting a high-level committee comprising two Judges of the High Court along with the Advocate General of Assam and a handful of officials.”

Further, Senior Advocate A.C. Borbora said in the press meet, “To shift the location of Gauhati High Court is an outrageous decision. Only less than ten years ago, the multistoried around 100 crore new building was inaugurated that was constructed out of the public’s money next to the old high court building. Now, to abandon this building constructed with designs and interiors to accommodate only court rooms and ancillary infrastructure will be an irrational idea, opposed to the causes and interests of the lawyers, litigants, and public in general.”

The association also said that non political organizations like ‘Save Guwahati, Build Guwahati’ have also extended their support to resolve against the shifting of Gauhati High Court. The Bar association will spread its vehement opposition to all other stake holders and public of Assam and Northeast against such an unrealistic and unilateral move.
