GUWAHATI: The Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim has raised the demand for immediate resumption of physical courts latest by September 1, 2020.

In a press release issued on August 27, 2020 the Bar Council said that if no steps to this regard are taken by the five-judge committee of the Gauhati High Court by September 1, 2020 it would resort to appropriate democratic agitational programme.

The Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court did constitute a five-judge committee to examine the feasibility of resumption of physical courts at all levels in the State. The committee held a meeting with all stakeholders, asked them to submit modalities/suggestions and said that it would communicate its decision by the weekend, i.e. August 22, 2020. According to the press release, the Bar Council submitted the modalities on August 21 at 3 pm. "However, surprisingly the committee without communicating its decision in writing issued a notification on August 21, 2020 and thereby unilaterally deferred its decision to first week of September 2020 and extending the existing system of virtual court till September 5, 2020," the release said.
