Barak Valley businessmen barred from reopening shops in Meghalaya

The Congress party has submitted a letter to Commissioner and Secretary of Meghalaya to allow businessmen of three districts of Barak Valley

GUWAHATI: The Congress party has submitted a letter to Commissioner and Secretary of Meghalaya to allow businessmen of three districts of Barak Valley (Karimganj, Cachar and Hailkandi) to run their existing business in various districts of Meghalaya by maintaining COVID-19 protocols and guidelines as prescribed by the Government of India and Meghalaya.

In the letter, APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) secretary Daiyan Hussain on behalf of the party stated that in various districts of Meghalaya particularly in East Jayantia Hills local administration and local self-government (Gaon Bura) are not allowing the businessmen of Barak districts to run their businesses.

Hussain stressed that due to the pandemic people from the aforementioned districts who were doing their respective businesses by running shops, hotels, salons etc in various districts of Meghalaya had to shut down their business and leave Meghalaya.

He underlined that the Meghalaya government are following Unlock IV guidelines and have allowed reopening of all kinds of shops by following the COVID-19 protocols. However, the businessmen from the Barak Valley have been barred to open their businesses which had led to loss of goods and properties amounting to crores of rupees, he added.
