GUWAHATI: The Basistha police on Monday arrested a youth named Amitabh Sarma on the charge of having duped hundreds of people by assuring that he would provide them with jobs as security personnel at the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL).

Police sources said that four of Amitabh Sarma's accomplices were detained on Sunday. The sources identified them as Dharmendra Chamua, Singpo Konyak, Bosu Kalita and Gokul Boro.

The sources said that Amitabh Sarma had summoned several hundred youths from across the State to Guwahati on Sunday, ostensibly to participate in a physical fitness test at a location near the Games Village in Basistha. However, when the aspiring job-seekers arrived at the location, they found no signs of any such test but met Chamua, Konyak, Kalita and Boro who posed as examiners of physical fitness.

The aspiring job-seekers then alerted the police, who registered a case (1050/22) and detained the quartet posing as examiners. Amitabh Sarma was subsequently arrested on the basis of revelations made by the detained persons, the sources said, adding that Sarma was involved in such acts of fraud earlier as well.
