Bike-rental racket busted by Dispur Police; two arrested

The Dispur Police has registered a case against three persons for duping people to hand over their vehicles on the pretext of putting it on rent under various ride-hailing platforms.

GUWAHATI: The Dispur Police has registered a case against three persons for duping people to hand over their vehicles on the pretext of putting it on rent under various ride-hailing platforms.

The accused - Debajit Bhattacharya, Dhurbajyoti Das, and Saurabh Sinha used to convince people to buy bikes on down payment and later hand it to them for putting it on rent under Rapido bike service. The gang followed the same modus operandi to lure people to hand over their cars. They promised monthly rent to the vehicle owners to pay the installments. However, after receiving the vehicle they used to disappear.

The Dispur Police have received around 10 complaints against the trio for which they have registered a case (1744/20) u/s 420/406 IPC. Many other cases have been registered against the accused with the Chandmari, Basistha, Geetanagar, and Bhangagarh police stations.

The Dispur Police arrested Dhurbajyoti Das, a resident of Howly under Barpeta District in October, 2020. On November 10, another member of the racket - Debajit Bhattacharya was arrested. He is a resident of Uday Nagar in the Koinadhora area of Guwahati. Meanwhile, Saurabh Sinha is absconding.
