GUWAHATI: Politics with the word 'Mughal' keeps shifting its target. The word that was uttered the most by the BJP leaders is now used by the Congress to attack the ruling party.

Addressing the media at Rajiv Bhawan here on Saturday, APCC chief spokesperson Durga Das Boro said, "The word Mughal emerged all of a sudden with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma giving different annotations of the word. One of the BJP leaders said that Mughals are in the BJP as well. This is true.

"The BJP has been ruling Assam now the way the Mughals did. The BJP government in the State enacted the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) to spell doom for the language and culture of the State. This is indeed a Mughal-like act.

"Earlier Assam and other States in the Northeast enjoyed 90:10 Central funding. However, the BJP-led Central government put an end to that funding pattern, virtually stopping development in the region. This is harsher an act than what the Mughal did.

"During the Congress days, industries were given exemptions so as to make industries thrive in the State. However, the BJP government stopped those exemptions. Of late, by enacting three farmers' Acts the BJP government has wrested farmers' rights. This is an act much more severe than those of Mughals," Boro said.
