GUWAHATI: Established way back in January 25 1845 the Guwahati Baptist Church has crossed glorious 175 years and it is going to celebrate its 175th anniversary where Governor Jagdish Mukhi will grace the occasion as chief guest. In relation to the 175th anniversary of the Church, Pastor Azizul Haque has prepared a book in memory of the linguistic, cultural, educational, social and religious contributions of the missionaries towards the development of Assam.
The book Avadan: Contribution of Baptist Missionaries Towards Assam explaining the life and works of 16 missionaries in Assam was formally released at Guwahati Press Club on Tuesday. The book also talks about the actual place in Unicode and scrapping of the anti-Assam CAA.
Educationist Amor Jyoti Choudhury formally inaugurated the book. Inaugurating the book Choudhury said that the book is truly relevant at this point of time. He said, “The Assamese language has to fight repeatedly for establishing its rights. We should remember the contribution of Baptist missionaries with respect for what they’ve contributed towards the Assamese language. This book must reach the young generation, for they must be aware of all the aspects of the Assamese language including the struggle that the language had to go through for its status.”
Among other dignitaries Padmashree Surya Hazarika and Dr. Dayananda Pathak graced the occasion as chief guests. Speaking on the occasion Dayananda Pathak said that the book will play the role of establishing a bridge. Pathak said, “We need to have historical sense and love for the past. Forgetting the past will appear as obstacle in our way towards development. The new generation is not totally aware of the contribution of the missionaries and they must be aware of these aspects.”
