GUWAHATI: The first Assamese novel of retired Assam Finance Service officer Ashim Kumar Baruah - 'Othiro Eehu Sonsaro' was released by writer and former Commissioner & Secretary of the Assam Government Thaneswar Malakar on Saturday.
The novel is based on some of the characters of those associated with Borduwa and Gangmow Thaan during Assam's Vaishnavite period.
Sahitya Akadami award winning writer Bipul Deuri, poet and social worker Dr Atul Kumar Bharali, writer and chief airport officer of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport Utpal Baruah were among those who attended the book release function held at Guwahati Press Club, stated a press release.
Highly praising the book, Malakar said that Baruah gave a detailed description under what circumstances Srimanta Sankardev had to leave Bordowa Thaan in the Nagaon district and go to Gangmow Thaan, located at Behali in the present-day Biswanath district. Malakar said that no one can think about the social lives of Assam without taking into account of the contributions of Srimanta Sankardev. Sankardev was not only a spiritual icon but a national icon of Assam, he said, adding 'Othiro Eehu Sonsaro' will give the opportunity to the readers to know about the Vaishanavite gurus, their prominent followers and their social welfare initiatives.
