GUWAHATI: After the success of the party in the Punjab elections, a buoyant Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided to contest in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). The GMC polls dates are expected to be announced soon.
The party is likely to field candidates in each of the 60 wards with 99 per cent of candidates to be chosen from among the people of the wards. Rajesh Sharma, a member of the AAP National Council and Assam in charge, expressed confidence that the Kejriwal model would work in Guwahati as it worked in Punjab. "The AAP won two wards in the recently concluded municipal polls in Lakhimpur and Tinsukia districts. We are confident that the results in Guwahati will be far better," said Sharma.
The AAP has formed committees in 28 of the 33 districts of the State. Sharma claimed that several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and National Students' Union of India (NSUI) members have joined AAP in Assam.
Laxmi Kanta Dubey, AAP State joint coordinator, said the party had already received applications from 15 GMC wards even before the elections dates were announced. "In the recently concluded municipal polls in Assam, we filtered out 34 candidates from 150 applicants, and the majority of them did well," she said and added, "AAP encourages people to forward the names of young, educated, and honest candidates in the GMC elections. Candidates free of the three Cs–corruption, criminal record, and communalism–will be prioritized by the AAP."
