GUWAHATI: What action the State government led by SarbanandaSonowal as the Chief Minister is going to take on the SI (sub-inspector) recruitment scam is very significant. The Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension has sent a missive to the State Chief Secretary for 'action as appropriate' in the scam.

In a statement issued to the media here on Sunday, SwarajAsom's chief convener BhabenHandique said, "On September 30, 2020 I did send a letter to the Prime Minister seeking CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) into the SI recruitment scam in Assam. The letter was under the consideration of the PMO (Prime Minister's Office) for a long time. It was on January 7, 2021 the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension sent a letter to the Assam Chief Secretary for 'action as appropriate' in the SI scam.

"What steps the Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal-led government, which came to power with the promise of zero tolerance to corruption, takes now is significant. Barring a few political honchos, an SP and a retired DIG, no political big fishes whose names figured in the recruitment scam were grilled by the investigators."

Suspecting the role of a few coaching centres in this episode, Handique said, "Without a CBI inquiry into the vexed scam, it will be very difficult to bust the racket."
