GUWAHATI: Locals of Chandrapur formed a human chain to protest against the government's move to shift the garbage-dumping ground from Boragaon to Chandrapur.

The protest programme — Save Kolong, Save Digaru – was staged at Kolong Bridge in the border of Kamrup Metro and Morigaon district.

Holding banners and raising slogans, the protesters stated that the dumping ground will destroy the biodiversity of the area.

"Kolong and Digaru rivers are the lifelines of the people of Chandrapur. The rivers have various types of fish and river dolphins. The dumping will bring an end to the existence of such species," said a protester.

It is to be noted that the protest was staged under the banner of Dumping Ground Birodhi Mancha and it was attended by various organizations.

The locals of Chandrapur have been protesting against the relocation of the dumping ground since June 26.
