NEW DELHI: A delegation of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the North East Students’ Organization (NESO) on Saturday called on Janata Dal (United) national general secretary KC Tyagi and sought the party's opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).

“We met KC Tyagi and sought the JD (U)'s opposition to the CAB which is posing a big threat to the indigenous people of the Northeast in general and Assam in particular,” said AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya. He said that the CAB would also violate the fundamental rights of the people of the Northeast. The delegation members included, among others, AASU president Dipanka Nath and NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa. “KC Tyagi has assured us that his party would oppose the Bill in the Parliament,” said Bhattacharya. Talking to this correspondent, Tyagi said that JD (U) was against the CAB on earlier occasions too. “We would suggest that the Bill should be sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) before it is introduced in the Parliament… and whatever unanimous decision comes up, our party will support it,” said Tyagi.
