GUWAHATI: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Kamrup Metro District Committee on Friday staged a protest at Gauhati Club against the hike in prices of petrol, diesel, LPG cylinders and other essential commodities. CITU general secretary Tapan Sarma said, "In comparison to 2016, the prices of petrol, diesel, and LPG cylinders have surged from 45 to 95 per cent. Within a month, the price of LPG cylinders has increased from Rs 643 to Rs 868," added Sarma.

Further, Sarma opined, "The common people especially the labourers and farmers have been badly affected by the price hike. The BJP government has completely failed to provide essential commodities at a reasonable prices to the common people."

The CITU demanded the Assam government to take necessary steps to control the price-hike situation. It asserted that if needed the government should take permission from the Election Commission to allow it to control the price-hike situation amid the code of conduct.

Following the protest, the CITU members sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the district commissioner.
