GUWAHATI: The SAGMDJP (Sadou Asom Goriya-Moria-Deshi Jatiya Parishad) on Wednesday welcomed the statement of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with respect to the indigenous Muslim community.

Talking to The Sentinel, SAGMDJP president Nurul Hoque said, "Our community is different from the immigrant Muslims. In this regard it is worth mentioning that the Parishad has been carrying out various programmes for the formal recognition of out status, culture, and heritage.

"Our roots can be traced to the indigenous tribal people and other local communities. So, our culture, heritage, and language have common links with the other ethnic communities of Assam.

"However, we started encountering an identity crisis after the influx of the migrant Muslims into our State."

Hoque added, "Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already initiated a number of steps for the indigenous Muslims. He has also made his stand clear in the Assembly. We look forward for the resolution of all our socio-economic issues."
